Mike J, of Kentlands, thanks for allowing us to help you out.

Mike thought he had a long list of complicated problems. He suggested that perhaps we should just pick up his computer. We really prefer to at least take a quick look at the computer in place. Many problems these days are specific to the computing envronment.

Fernando was in, and out in an hour. It ends out that Mike has an incorrect Proxy setting, and that was keeping him from connecting to the internet properly.

On XP you can change the proxy settings by going

Start Menu -> Control Panel -> Internet Options -> Connection Tab -> LAN Settings button

Then you should see the proxy settings on the lower half of the window.

In Mike’s case these settings were incorrect, fixing them allowed him to get back on the internet.

Thanks for stopping by.

  1. Sometimes the personal firewall settings also can cause similar issues. Users have to check the firewall rules. Especially Norton has a bit complecated settings for novice PC users.

  2. hello, I am taking a computer repair and comptia a+ certification class and i still have no idea how to repair a computer. I only have 5 weeks of class left. what books would best teach me how to repair a computer and stuudy for my test when i take it.

  3. For networking support on Windows XP, it is important to remember the proxy connection settings from the internet options panel. You can use the feature to automatically detect proxy settings. But as my experience in the Branson computer repair field has taught me, this does not always work. Always check to make sure your proxy is running on port :8080 (this is usaully the norm for Microsoft operating systems) and make sure your XP (or other) firwall is set to allow traffic to come across the proxy port.
