Germantown, MD Computer Repair – Wireless Network Problem

Thanks Andrea L of Germantown, MD for allowing me to help you out yesterday evening.

Who would have thought that wanting to use your notebook in your kitchen would gotten so complicated. I was glad to see that once I was able to correct the issues caused before I got there, then I was able to install the proper drivers for your Dell Wireless 1470 mini-PCI card, and was able to tune your router to work more effectively in your environment.

It was interesting to see that all of your neighbors were using either channels 1, or 11, so switching you to channel 5 should result in a system that works a bit better.

N-Draft router setup

I performed a computer service repair call in Bethesda, MD.

At M.H.’s home she was having trouble maintaining a good connection between her Actiontec FIOS router, and her Laptop. I had tried earlier replacing her old laptop card with a ndraft model, but she still had problems. Today I installed a matching N-Draft Router. It is showing 270Mb/sec so hopefully this will work for her.

.Net 1.1 windows update problem

This afternoon (well really yesterday afternoon – I am a day late on the BLOG) I had a computer service call in Friendship Heights, Chevy Chase, Maryland.

NB’s computer kept trying to apply a .NET SP 1 update and failing.  Also although it was set up to “not show the login screen” the login screen was showing.  After applying windows updates, and recycling the settings all was fine.

K St Computer Network Repair

The WatzaNetwork computer repair service area includes K Street, NW Washington, DC.

Today I had to head down to K and 21st in Washington DC. A customer was having trouble with his internet access. The router in his office has stopped communicating with the Verizon DSL Modem. A firmware update fixed the problem, but then I also had to put back some of his custom settings. He wanted to enable Remote Desktop, also wanted to limit internet access to just two of the PC’s. I set up the Internet Access Filter on his Trendnet Router to limit access per the customer’s request.

If you need service please call WatzaNetwork, or see watzastore.

Wireless XBox 360 Problem

Today was North Potomac Computer Repair Day!

I spent most of today at Bob W’s residence in North Potomac, MD. He was having problems with MicroSoft office, having problems sharing files, had some McAfee startup errors. It ended out that he did not have properly licensed MSOffice, so we fixed that with a new copy of Office 2003 Standard. Then fixed McAfee, so that it was running properly. Then got Sharing going for the files he wanted to access on his desktop from his laptop. The we configured his son’s Wireless XBox. With the XBOX on the wireless network, we could no longer share files between the wireless laptop, and wired PC. Go Figure. I could not believe it, so I did a little testing, and found that when the XBOX was online, the PC’s would not share properly. With the XBOX offline, we could share.

I googled XBox Network problems, and saw that people seem to have some duplicate IP problems, but that was not the problem here. Somehow the XBox scrambled the wireless making it unusable for file sharing.

We even tried a 2nd router, but to no avail. Ugh! Be careful trying to put an XBox 360 on your wireless.

Apple Mac Backup 3 gotcha

Mac Repair Darnestown, and Gaithersburg.

We brought an Imac G5 back from the dead.  The power supply had failed, taking with it the Logic Board, and the hard drive.  Lucky for us, and Jim D. the power problem had not killed off the hard drive all together.  It was damaged, but we were able to get much of the data off of it.

One more little example in the list of Mac, and Windows PC differences. If you have a Mac, you can download the Apple Backup program, commonly called backup 3.

Backup 3 allows you to backup all of your personal settings to your iDisk. But, — and please correct me if I am wrong — it does not seem to automatically backup your e-mails. From what I can tell, it grabs the settings, but not the actual e-mails. Could it be that Apple assumes that all of it’s users use IMAP e-mail where the mail stays on the server? I have nothing against IMAP e-mail — been using it myself for years, but most people I run into are using POP3. So be careful with the Mac Backup 3 program. You may need to set up a custom backup job it you want to save your old e-mails.
